Google Ads Updates 2026: Every Major Change So Far, as One Checklist
The short answer
Most of the Google Ads updates 2026 has brought hand more decisions to Google’s AI, then add controls back. The three that change what a typical account does without anyone touching it: Dynamic Search Ads and automatically created assets are being upgraded to AI Max, Performance Max now shows where its money goes, and new channel budget controls are rolling out ahead of a February 2027 change. Every item below is dated from Google’s own announcements and checked on 25 October 2026.

This is a working list of the Google Ads updates 2026 has brought so far, grouped by where they show up in your account. Each entry gives the month, what changed in Google’s words, and one thing to check. We update it as Google announces more; the dates come from each article’s own date line on Google’s announcements page, the Google blog and Google Ads Help.
Google Ads updates 2026: Search and AI Max
The biggest Google Ads updates 2026 brought to Search all run through AI Max, the layer Google adds on top of a Search campaign to match more queries, rewrite text and choose landing pages.
- April 2026: AI Max leaves beta and replaces Dynamic Search Ads. Google said AI Max is out of beta and that, starting in September, campaigns using Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting are automatically upgraded to AI Max. Google calls AI Max the next generation of Dynamic Search Ads. To do: list every campaign that used any of the three, open its settings, and decide on text customization, final URL expansion and the brand and location controls yourself.
- August 2026: AI Max experiments and planning. AI Max experiments can now run with brand and location controls switched on, a single A/B test across several Search campaigns can compare budgets and ROI targets (rolling out from September), and Performance Planner can apply its suggested changes in one click. To do: test AI Max on one campaign with your guardrails on before turning it on everywhere.
- September 2026: AI Brief in more languages, and new AI Max reporting. AI Brief, which lets you guide AI Max in your own words, expanded its closed beta to Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. Google also announced a single view of the Search ad journey: the search term, the assets seen and the landing page, with availability to follow. To do: if you’re in the beta, write the brief like a campaign brief for a new hire: who it’s for, what to say, what never to say.
- Ongoing: ads inside AI Overviews. Google’s help page says text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can show in AI Overviews, in English in 12 countries including the US. There’s no separate opt-out, and their results are mixed into your normal campaign and search terms reports. For ads inside AI Mode, which Google expanded to 10 more countries on 28 October, see our guide to ads in AI Mode. To do: watch for search terms phrased as questions, and make sure your landing pages answer them.
If more matching means more irrelevant searches, our weekly search-term triage keeps them in check with a free script.
Google Ads updates 2026: Performance Max
Two of the most useful Google Ads updates 2026 delivered are about visibility: seeing where Performance Max spends, and new places it can show.
- April 2026: channel performance reporting in every campaign. Google made the channel performance report available in all Performance Max campaigns, with search partners and access from manager accounts to follow. To do: open the report for each campaign and note how much goes to each channel before changing budgets.
- April 2026: Waze inventory for store goals. In the US, Performance Max campaigns for store goals can now show as Promoted Places pins in Waze navigation, using existing assets and with no extra setup. Google plans more markets. To do: if you run store goals in the US, check whether Waze appears in the channel report.
- June 2026: Smart Bidding Exploration for all Performance Max without a feed. Smart Bidding Exploration, which uses a ROAS tolerance to reach converting queries you aren’t winning, expanded to all Performance Max campaigns without a product feed, with a beta for Shopping ads. To do: if you use it, set the tolerance deliberately and compare conversion value, not just volume.
Bidding and budgets
Budget controls are where the Google Ads updates 2026 has brought get most practical: they decide which channel gets money first.
- June 2026: promotion mode (beta). Promotion mode lets you schedule temporary changes to your ROAS tolerance and add extra daily budget for peak periods. To do: for your next sale, schedule the change in advance instead of editing targets by hand on the day.
- October 2026: channel priorities and spend caps. New channel controls let you mark channels as high or low priority and cap low-priority spend as a share of the daily budget, on a best-effort basis. They are rolling out to Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen over the coming months. From February 2027, the current spend allocation for Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on will be removed. To do: find every Search campaign with the Display Network switched on and decide before February whether it should stay on.
Demand Gen and YouTube
Among the Google Ads updates 2026 brought for YouTube, the steadiest is the monthly Demand Gen Drop Google has published on its announcements page since January. The largest batch came in May 2026:
- May 2026: Google Maps, checkout links and one-click setup. Demand Gen added Google Maps inventory, expanded checkout links to nine more markets, extended product feeds to more surfaces and verticals including automotive, and added AI-assisted campaign creation that copies settings from an existing campaign such as Performance Max. To do: if you sell products, connect the feed; if you’re local, check Maps reach in the placement report.
- May 2026: creator videos in the asset picker. Creator partnership videos can be boosted straight from the asset picker during campaign setup. To do: if creators already make videos for you, test one as an ad before shooting new footage.
Creative tools in Asset Studio
Creative tools got some of the most visible Google Ads updates 2026 had to offer, all inside Asset Studio, Google’s built-in creative workspace:
- March 2026: Veo image-to-video. Veo in Asset Studio turns up to three images into videos of up to 10 seconds each, packaged with templates, for all campaigns. To do: if you have no video assets, make one from product photos and see whether it lifts Demand Gen results.
- April 2026: Nano Banana Pro image generation. Nano Banana Pro rolled out to all active Google Ads users in Asset Studio, with conversational editing and scenes showing up to five products. To do: check generated images for accurate product details before they run.
- August 2026: Gemini Omni video creation. Gemini Omni added multimodal video creation in Asset Studio: import brand guidelines, generate storyboards from a prompt, refine scenes, and export vertical and horizontal versions. Google says it’s free and adds SynthID watermarks. To do: load your brand guidelines first, so every generated draft starts on-brand.
AI agents and assistants
- April 2026: Ads Advisor. Ads Advisor, Google’s AI agent inside Google Ads, reached English-language accounts. Google says it asks for approval before taking action. To do: treat its suggestions like any recommendation: check each one against your goals, and use change history to see what changed.
- May 2026: Ask Advisor. At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google introduced Ask Advisor, one agent built with Gemini that spans Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center and Google Marketing Platform. To do: start with questions you can verify yourself, such as why spend changed last week, before acting on its advice.
Our guide to AI for Google Ads covers the skills that matter when agents suggest changes, plus four reusable assistant skills.
Policy, review and labels
- July 2026: real-time policy reviews. Real-Time Policy Reviews now check responsive search ads as you write them, field by field, and give a policy decision the moment you save; policy-compliant ads can start serving almost immediately. Other campaign types follow later in the year. To do: fix editorial flags while drafting; our responsive search ads checker catches most of them before you even open Google Ads.
- July 2026: AI label setting. Google Ads added an AI label setting for assets created or edited with AI, because rules in the EU, India and New York require disclosure for some AI-generated ads. Google’s policy update says using the setting doesn’t by itself guarantee compliance. To do: if you advertise in those markets, label AI-made images and videos and check the local rules.
Tools and the Google Ads API
- September 2026: developer tokens retired. Google’s API access page says developer tokens were sunset on 9 September 2026; access levels now belong to a Google Cloud project. New projects start with test accounts only, and Explorer access allows up to 2,880 operations a day on real accounts. To do: if a third-party tool or automation connects to your account, confirm it still syncs. Google Ads scripts run inside the account and don’t need API access.
Google Ads updates 2026 still to come
Several of this year’s changes were announced with dates still ahead. Google has said that:
- the new channel priorities and spend caps roll out to Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen over the coming months, and the old Display spend allocation in Search goes in February 2027;
- the single AI Max report of search terms, assets and landing pages gets its availability details later in 2026;
- Real-Time Policy Reviews extend from responsive search ads to other campaign types later in the year;
- Waze inventory in Performance Max expands beyond the US;
- search partners and manager-account access arrive in the Performance Max channel report.
When each of these lands, we add it to the list above with its date.
The whole year as one checklist
Here are the Google Ads updates 2026 has brought, turned into to-dos. Work through them in order; most take a few minutes each:
- List campaigns that used Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match, and review their AI Max settings.
- Open the channel performance report in every Performance Max campaign and note the split by channel.
- Find Search campaigns with the Display Network on, and decide before February 2027.
- Check search terms weekly; AI Max and AI Overviews bring in new queries.
- If you advertise in the EU, India or New York, label AI-generated images and videos.
- Confirm every third-party tool that connects to Google Ads still syncs after the API change.
- Schedule your next sale with promotion mode if you have access, instead of editing targets on the day.
- Load brand guidelines into Asset Studio before generating images or video.
- Decide how far Ads Advisor and Ask Advisor may go, and review change history weekly.
How we built this list
Every entry comes from Google’s own pages: the Google Ads announcements page, the Google blog, Google Ads Help and the Google Ads API documentation. We date each item from the article’s own date line, not the date a page lists it under. That matters: Google’s announcements page lists several older articles under January 2026, and their own dates show they came out in 2025, so they aren’t on this list. Three articles carry no date of their own (the June bidding update, Nano Banana Pro and Gemini Omni); for those we use the date the announcements page gives, which matches what they describe. One undated article we couldn’t place, on Performance Max asset experiments, is left out.
We also left out regional programs, retail media and changes that only affect app campaigns, to keep the list to what a typical Search, Shopping or YouTube advertiser will meet.
The bottom line
The Google Ads updates 2026 has delivered follow one pattern: more automation by default, then controls to steer it. The work for advertisers is the same each time, find what switched on, decide whether you want it, and check the reports that show what it did. This list was last checked on 25 October 2026; we add new changes as Google announces them.
Frequently asked questions
What are the biggest Google Ads updates 2026 has brought?
The upgrade of Dynamic Search Ads and automatically created assets to AI Max from September, channel performance reporting in every Performance Max campaign, new channel priority and budget controls, and AI agents such as Ads Advisor and Ask Advisor.
Which Google Ads updates 2026 brought need action right away?
Three: review the campaigns upgraded to AI Max, open the channel performance report in each Performance Max campaign, and check Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on before February 2027.
What happened to Dynamic Search Ads in 2026?
Google announced in April 2026 that, starting in September, campaigns using Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match are automatically upgraded to AI Max.
What is AI Brief in Google Ads?
A way to guide AI Max in plain language, describing your business, audience and messaging. It’s a closed beta and expanded to seven more languages in September 2026.
Can I see where Performance Max spends my budget?
Yes. Since April 2026 the channel performance report is available in all Performance Max campaigns, and Google is adding search partners and manager-account access to it.
What changes in Google Ads in February 2027?
Google says the current spend allocation setup for Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on will be removed, as part of the new channel priority and budget controls.
Does the Google Ads API change affect scripts?
No. Google Ads scripts run inside your account under your own sign-in, so the September 2026 move to Google Cloud project access doesn’t apply to them. It matters for third-party tools that connect through the API.
Do I need to label AI-generated ads?
In some markets, yes. Google added an AI label setting in July 2026 because rules in the EU, India and New York require disclosure for certain AI-generated ads, and says the setting alone doesn’t guarantee compliance.
How do I keep up with Google Ads updates?
Check Google’s announcements page and the Google Ads Help pages for the features you use, and read the monthly Demand Gen Drop if you run YouTube ads. We add new Google Ads updates 2026 brings to this checklist as they arrive.
